Last night I stayed up until 3:30am watching the SyFy show Eureka.  It is not the first time I have done this.  I watched the entire first season of Downton Abbey in one night.  That night ended around 4am.  When I found the second season on Netflix a few months later, I stayed up until 5am.  And these were school nights.  All of them.

I know, you’re wondering what’s wrong with me.  Who would do such a crazy thing? You’re not a college student anymore!  Although, I only did two all nighters in college.  And I was a huge baby about it.  I’ve learned to live with sleep deprivation since then.  I like to think I’ve toughened up a bit in my old age.

Here’s why I do it…  All day long my three lovelies are hugging me, hanging on me, smearing snot and who knows what all on me; and talking, whining, and letting me know every single thing they think throughout the entire day. 6am-8pm.  Those are my “working” mom hours.  Its a long day.  And once they’re in bed, I still have to clean a bit, and work a lot.  I do most of my photography work at night after they’re in bed.

What I “should” do is work quickly, and go to bed by 10pm.  But that only happens once in a blue moon.  Because that is my “me” time.  My off hours.  The only time of day I can enjoy silence, and do what I want to do.  So I stay up until midnight usually, 4am occasionally.  And I’ve never regretted it.  I’d rather enjoy a few hours all to myself with no one asking me to do things, or hanging on me, and watching totally stupid TV shows.  Sometimes, sleep is not my priority.  Sometimes Mommy just needs a few hours with some ice cream and a really cheesy TV show.
